Consumers, businesses can now send used cartridges back to HP

Starting April 7, HP Canada added an important element to its already impressive recycling program. Consumers and businesses are now able to send their used HP inkjet cartridges back to HP for recycling.

“This launch is significant because it establishes HP Canada as the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to introduce an inkjet recycling program,” said Anthony Faga, Category Business Manager for Ink Supplies. The inkjet cartridge recycling program builds on HP’s established Planet Partners program, which includes a service to evaluate, donate or recycle printing supplies and computer hardware.

The process for submitting used cartridges is very simple. HP customers can now log onto http://www.hp.ca/recycle to request pre-paid shipping material that enables them to conveniently recycle their used HP inkjet cartridges.

How it works
All returned cartridges go through HP’s multi-phase recycling process. First, packaging is separated and recycled independently. Returned cartridges are then shredded and separated into plastics and metals, which are further separated and used to make new products such as auto parts and lunch trays. Any remaining waste is disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.

Building on our legacy
“The HP Canada inkjet cartridge recycling program builds on the success of HP’s history of environmental responsibility,” said Frances Edmonds, recycling manager, HP Canada. “HP’s commitment to reducing waste goes beyond the Planet Partners recycling programs. We are striving to ensure that all our products are environmentally sound and their manufacture is conducted in an environmentally-responsible manner.”

“Being the first OEM off the mark with an inkjet recycling program is a natural step for HP Canada,” says Anthony. “This program reinforces our longstanding commitment to being a leader in delivering sustainable solutions to reduce the environmental impact of HP, our partners and our customers.”

Here’s how…
HP continues to design products for recyclability

As technology leaders, HP has always felt a strong responsibility to full product lifecycle environmental stewardship. This process starts as early as the design phase when HP starts looking at ways to improve the recycling capability of our products.

To that end, HP can take pride in these landmark steps:

  • HP was the first company to invent a patented technology to enable the use of recycled plastics in new HP inkjet cartridges
  • Since 1992, HP has reduced the average number of parts used in monochrome HP Laserjet print cartridges by 25 per cent and reduced the number of plastic resin types by 51 per cent
  • Since HP began recycling Laserjet cartridges in 1991 and inkjet cartridges in 1997, millions of pounds of material have been recycled.
