Hewlett-Packard has donated $125,000 to the Indonesian Red Cross, locally known as PMI or Palang Merah Indonesia , to fund its emergency program for the victims of the December 26, 2004 tsunami disaster. PMI has laid out the plan to use the funding mainly in the building of temporary shelters and the provision of basic needs of homeless victims, numbering hundreds of thousands over a very wide area.
This financial assistance was formally presented by HP Indonesia's Board of Directors to the Head of PMI, Mar'ie Muhammad.
Muhammad said, “PMI truly appreciate HP's intention to donate for the victims of tsunami disaster in both NAD and N of Sumatra. We certainly do our best to render the most ideal form of aid, and deliver it effectively, timely and directly to the identified victims as documented by our Indonesian Red Cross programs in those two provinces.”
“We send our deepest condolences and sympathy to the victims of tsunami tragedy in Aceh and North Sumatra . This commitment of support is one of the main global tasks in assisting all the nations affected by the tsunami. HP globally raised approximately $3 million of fund to this commitment,” said Elisa Lumbantoruan, President Director of HP Indonesia.
HP is also hard at working to restore and enable the IT systems in the affected areas of Aceh. Computer facilities amounting to Rp 100 million was donated by Hewlett-Packard for restoring IT operations, including internet facilities in serving the requirements to assist logistics in disaster area, information exchange of emergency volunteer teams and journalists, both local and foreign.
HP Indonesia's Director of Public Sector, Syahmudrian Lubis, said “In this situation, Hewlett Packard Indonesia 's commitment does not stop at emergency stage only. We are committed to help in the restoration and reconstruction of information and communication facilities. HP Indonesia plans to collaborate with Indonesian Body for Meteorology and Geophysics in building a ‘ National Notification Center ' aimed at forecasting and warning the general public.”
“We intend to increase the speed of critical information distribution to the general public” added Lubis.
In view of these, Hewlett-Packard Indonesia promised the Department of Transportation to provide $ 50,000 worth of computer hardware systems to build the prototype of ‘Early Notification Systems'. This facility will be installed in the province of Nangroe Aceh Darusalam .
In the ranks of its workforce, Hewlett Packard Indonesia 's Director for Human Resources, Setya Rahardi, mentioned “The employees of HP expressed their condolences to the people who lost their loved ones and extended their arms to help the survivors. Immediately after the disaster, all of us contributed cash donations, clothing, ready-to-eat food and medicines to be sent to the victims. We also sent inflatable rubber-boats to help in rescue and transport in the affected areas. Furthermore, HP encourages its employees who would like to volunteer to spare their time helping the victims in the field.”
