Coming out on top of an accomplished field of nominees, HP reinforced its position as a respected industry leader recently when it was voted the number one IT Hardware Company in   at the 2006 NDTV Profit Business Leadership Awards.

Held on 28 July 2006 at a glittering ceremony attended by the elite of India’s business community, and presided over by the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Awards honoured organisations in 14 categories, including banking, oil and gas, telecommunications, aviation, retail, information technology and more.

The IT Hardware category was contested by a high-profile list of companies, with HP eventually prevailing over stiff competition from IBM, D-Link, PCS Technology and Wipro-e-peripheral.

Great organisations – born of great leaders, driven by great teams

Although the stated objective of the NDTV Profit Business Leadership Awards is “to salute men and women who fuel India's journey to the forefront of the World Economy”, the Awards aim to also honour the many talented people they lead.

Accepting the IT Hardware award, Managing Director of HP India, Balu Doraisamy, placedthe company’s 25000 employees very much at the forefront of his acceptance speech:

“HP is honoured by this recognition from NDTV. The award is a tribute to our customers and employees who have helped take HP to its leadership position,” he said.

“Being chosen for the award by industry peers and partners makes this a key inflection point in our journey towards setting new benchmarks as a performance-driven, values-led company.”

And the nominees are...

The verticals included aviation, banks, consumer durables, FMCG, infrastructure, insurance companies, IT hardware, IT software, shipping and logistics, mutual funds, oil and gas, retailing, telecommunications, and travel and tourism.

In order to determine the nominees in each of these categories, the in-depth study was divided into separate stages.

The first involved collection of crucial market data on each of the organisations eligible for entry. Senior management of the short listed entities, or SLEs, were then required to answer a common set of questions. These executives were then interviewed or surveyed by market research firm and Awards partner, Synovate. In the third stage, peer groups nominated by the organisation, or companies appointed by the Awards Management, were then interviewed in a similar fashion to support answers given by the SLEs during the self-evaluation stage.

Based on the findings of the study, the top five nominees were selected from each vertical.

The cream of the crop

At the conclusion of the five months, established names such as HSBC, Nokia, Sony, Pepsi, IBM, Federal Express, Phillips, as well as HP, sat alongside many more newly established companies, competing for recognition.

Charged with the responsibility of choosing the winners was a jury made up of the cream of Indian business - distinguished economists, company directors, chairpersons, university lecturers and journalists. The renowned group included: economist and member of numerous government and private sector boards, Mr. Amit Mitra; Ms. Anu Aga, former Chairperson of energy and environment solutions provider, Thermax; economist and former Indian Reserve Bank Governor, Dr. Bimal Jalan; Mr. Narayana Murthy, Chairman and Chief Mentor of global IT consulting and software services provider, Infosys; former economic advisor to the Indian Government, political analyst and television personality, Dr. Prannoy Roy; and Mr. Suman Dubey, a respected journalist, currently the corporate representative for Dow Jones in India.

In selecting the 14 winners, the jury members sought to not only acknowledge outstanding industry leaders, but reward those organisations that best represented the corporate dynamism of a country whose economy is itself, rapidly becoming a leader on the global stage. The list of winners also sets a strong precedent for subsequent years of competition, something described by Raj Nayak, CEO of NDTV – ’s largest private producer of business, sports and entertainment television – as “a new benchmark and platform for recognising excellence in business.” [1]

Laying the foundations of a prosperous India

In his speech to attendees at the Awards, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh praised the creative spirit, enterprise and hard work of the Indian people. He recalled how, 15 years earlier business leaders were lamenting the future, wondering how   would survive radical reforms being put in place by the government at that time. The ceremony gave the Prime Minister the perfect opportunity to offer his retort to the naysayers – and in doing sopaid the winners and nominees of theNDTV Profit Business Leadership Awards the highest compliment:

“Those who worried in the early 1990s that Indian business would not be in a position to take on the challenge of globalisation have been decisively proved wrong by each one of you,” he said.

“The Indian economy has experienced unprecedented change and growth in the last two decades… you stand testimony to the competitive abilities of Indian enterprise.”

“I am confident that 15 years from now you, and many more like you, will once again prove the ‘Prophets of Doom’ wrong.”[2]
