Brussels – 6 October 2009 - HP announced today its success at the International Visual Communications Association (IVCA) Clarion Awards, as its Global Citizenship 2008 report and campaign was honoured with the award for Strategic Communications in the Corporate Communications category.
The IVCA Clarion Awards recognise best practice in communicating the importance of CSR, sustainable development, social inclusion and ethical debate. They are endorsed by senior communicators, leading business people and CSR specialists.
HP received this award at the BFI Southbank in London, where its 2008 Global Citizenship report and communications campaign were duly praised.
“This year’s nominations for the IVCA Clarion Awards showcase the outstanding work that is being produced for both corporate and broadcast clients. The quality of entries this year was incredibly high,” said Marco Forgione, CEO of IVCA. “In awarding HP for their Global Citizenship Report 2008 and the supporting campaign the judges were impressed by the high calibre of skills, creativity and innovation. This campaign showed that HP takes their CSR responsibilities very seriously and that it is well embedded in their corporate psyche."
HP's 2008 Global Citizenship report highlights the company’s corporate social responsibility policies, programmes, performance and goals, for fiscal year 2008. Among the focus areas detailed in the report were environmental sustainability, ethics and compliance, human rights and labour practices, privacy, and social investment.
The report was supported by an extensive integrated internal and external communications campaign, which included a version of the report customized for customers; website content, newsletters, blog posts and other e-communications; and a mini-intranet site with tools and information for HP communicators, marketers and members of its sales force.
“We are delighted to receive this award. The acknowledgement for our hard work supports us in continuing to demonstrate leadership through our Global Citizenship report,” said Jeannette Weisschuh, Director of Global Citizenship HP EMEA. “Reporting is fundamental to good global citizenship and an important form of communication with many stakeholders.”
HP’s major global citizenship accomplishments in 2008 include:
• HP was the first IT company to release the greenhouse gas emissions associated with its products manufacturing by publishing the emissions attributed to its first-tier suppliers. The reporting is part of HP’s effort to offer greater transparency and encourage other companies to do more to promote supply chain responsibility.
• HP introduced the HP Deskjet D2545 Printer, the company’s first printer made almost entirely from recycled plastic material. Eighty-three percent of the printer’s total plastic weight is made from recycled plastics, and it uses HP 60 ink cartridges, which are moulded from recycled plastic resins. Additionally, the overall packaging for this printer is 100 percent recyclable. The printer is ENERGY STAR® qualified and features HP Smart Web Printing, which lets users easily combine portions of numerous web pages onto one page to save paper.
• HP reduced the greenhouse gas emissions associated with its energy use globally by 4 percent compared to 2007 in absolute terms and 13 percent normalized to revenue. Last year HP continued to foster its education programmes for the next generation of high-tech innovators and entrepreneurs. These focused on science, technology, engineering and math in secondary schools and higher education institutions in collaboration with key partners. In total, HP contributed over €34 million in cash and products in 2008 to advance education, promote entrepreneurship and assist communities. In Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) more than one million students have benefited from HP´s education and entrepreneurship programmes.
