HP Helps Universities to Make Innovative Use of Technology for Teaching

GENEVA, Switzerland, June 02, 2008

HP today announced that 15 universities across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) will receive an HP Wireless Technology for Teaching grant to promote most innovative student projects in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. 

HP will provide the selected universities with mobile technology to redesign courses and improve student-teacher interaction. The grants, valued at around €64,142 per university (approximately 0,000, US list price) consists of cash and HP mobile technology such as 21 HP tablet PCs, HP handhelds (iPaqs) a mobile classroom (transportable trolley) and a HP Procurve Wireless Access Point.


“HP has recognised that it can have the biggest impact on education by encouraging innovative uses of technology to improve teaching and learning,” said Gabi Zedlmayer, vice president of Corporate Marketing and Global Citizenship, HP Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “We invest in schools and universities to increase educational attainment and contribute to the development of a skilled, diverse workforce for the future.”


The following institutions will each receive a 2008 Technology for Teaching Grant from HP:

  • Elektrotehnièki fakultet Univerziteta u Sarajevu, Bosnia Herzegovina
  • Ecole Centrale de Nantes, France
  • Hochschule Furtwangen University, Faculty of Business Information Systems, Department of Business Networking (eBusiness), Germany
  • Università degli Studi di Urbino “Carlo Bo”, Italy
  • University of Jos, Nigeria
  • University of Gdansk,Gdansk, Poland
  • Universidade de Évora, Portugal
  • Novosibirsk State University, Russia
  • University of Novi Sad Faculty of Sciences, Serbia
  • Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, Comenius University, Slovakia
  • University of the Free State, South Africa
  • Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain
  • Abu Dhabi Men’s College, Higher Colleges of Technology, UAE
  • Makerere, University, Uganda
  • Leeds Metropolitan Higher Education Corporation, United Kingdom

As one of this year’s winners, the Abu Dhabi Men’s College in Dubai plans to use the HP donation to implement multiple e-learning strategies. Each student will have its own laptop or HP tablet PC. This equipment will be used to facilitate the course delivery in multiple disciplines: Networking, Web development, databases, English and Business.


Comenius University in Slovakia is using the grant as the tool for lecturers, who project their presentations and teach various programming languages.  The aim is to improve teaching and learning of various mathematical subjects in preparation of future and present teachers of the subject.


Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK is planning to transform the classroom from ’delivery space’ into ‘active enquiry and authorship’ with the help of HP’s grant.  HP Tablet technology, integrated into the teaching and learning strategy will allow sharing of practical experience and problems between students on line.

About the Technology for Teaching Grant Programme

Each grant runs for 12 months, after which the universities continue to use the equipment they have received. In addition, HP is encouraging grant recipients past and present to form a community of best practices by holding conferences and offering an online community of practice for the grant recipients and education experts, extending to more than 280 campuses in 41 countries. Once a year the universities are meeting at an international conference to learn from each other and stay connected.


HP Technology for Teaching celebrates it’s 5th year and encompasses a total investment of nearly million worldwide.  HP has contributed grants to more than 1,000 schools in 41 countries worldwide.
