HP today announced that 13 universities across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) will receive an HP Wireless Technology for Teaching grant to promote student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
HP will provide the selected universities with mobile technology to redesign courses and improve student-teacher interaction. The grants, valued at around €58,000 per university (approximately $70,000, US list price), consists of cash and equipment such as classroom sets of HP Tablet PCs, printers and cameras.
“HP has learned that it can have the biggest impact on education by encouraging innovative uses of technology to improve teaching,” said Gabi Zedlmayer, vice president of Corporate Marketing and Global Citizenship, HP Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “We invest in schools and universities to increase educational attainment and contribute to the development of a skilled, diverse workforce for the future.”
The following institutions will each receive a 2007 Technology for Teaching Grant from HP:

• Faculty of Informatics and Information Technologies, Slovak University of Technology, Slovakia
• Information Technology Institute of Saint-Petersburg State University, Russian Federation
• Instituto Superior Técnico, Portugal
• The University of Nottingham, UK
• The University of the West of England, UK
• Universidad de León, Spain
• Universidade do Minho, Portugal
• University Politechnic of Bucharest, Romania
About the Technology for Teaching Grant Programme
Each grant runs for 12 months, after which the universities continue to use the equipment they have received. In addition, HP is encouraging grant recipients past and present to form a community of best practices by holding conferences and organising online sessions with grant winners and education experts.
Over the past three years, HP has donated Technology for Teaching grants to more than 30 universities in the EMEA region. From 2004 to 2006, HP contributed grants to more than 650 schools worldwide worth €27 million ($36 million, US list price). During the past 20 years, HP has contributed more than €700 million ($1 billion) in cash and equipment to schools, universities, community organisations and other non-profit organisations around the world.
