LONDON, 27 February, 2008 – HP and Cisco today announced an agreement with Buckinghamshire New University intended to transform the learning experience for students.

Under the agreement, HP and Cisco will become the primary suppliers of ICT products and services to the university for the next three years. The companies will deploy a converged voice, video and data network so students can collaborate using, among other methods, instant messaging, voice emails and streaming video. The new network also will free students from the need to physically be on campus to undertake their courses.

Dr Ruth Farwell, vice chancellor of Buckinghamshire New University, said: “One of our core values is putting students first and this new relationship will offer students creative ways of learning that will accelerate their progress and enhance the student experience. For example, our nursing students will be able to work even more effectively when they are on placements in hospitals because HP and Cisco equipment will keep them connected with the campus and staff will be able to support them when they are away from the University.”

The collaboration between HP and Cisco is a crucial part of the transformation of the university campus, which is undergoing an extensive programme of rebuilding and refurbishment to be completed by 2009. A new, high-tech learning resource centre and data centre on the High Wycombe site will form the focal point of the university’s technology-led learning experience.

“Our collaboration with Cisco will change the way students, academics and administrators collaborate as well as position the university competitively to attract new students and drive innovation in the future,” said Martin Hess, sales director – UK & Ireland, HP. “Bucks New University has only recently acquired university status, but its far-sighted, technology-led approach will provide relevant courses to help students compete in their future workplace.”

Scot Gardner, public sector operations director – UK & Ireland at Cisco, said: “Universities are now at the forefront of technological innovation so this is a natural association for both HP and Cisco. The solutions we build here will inform further solutions outside of education, in business and the public sector.”

Bucks New University was granted university status in 2007. The development of strategic relationships with large industry partners is a key success factor in the realisation of the university’s goal to build a reputation, both nationally and internationally, as a centre of excellence in its specialist areas of e-learning, distance learning, collaborative working, and video and music production.
