Feb. 2006 -- The eyes of the mobility world are turning to Barcelona for the 3GSM World Congress, one of the largest mobile service provider industry events of the year.

3GSM is all about mobile services – and the mobile services value chain, from the core elements of network and operations systems themselves to the 'edge' of the network, the wireless devices that consumers use in their everyday lives, and the services and personalized content that make them exciting.

CEOs, CIOs, and other decision makers can learn more about HP's entire end-to-end mobility spectrum – ranging from carrier-grade platforms, mobile network software and solutions, operations support systems, billing, and mobile applications to the wireless laptop, tablet PC or iPAQ pocket PC.

HP is leveraging 25 years of expertise in both telecom and IT to lead the mobile industry. The HP mission is to help its customers – the world’s mobile equipment and service providers – achieve the twin goals of 1) generating new revenue through personalized, content-rich services and 2) reducing cost, risk and time to market.

3GSM highlights include keynotes from HP executives and partners, strategic sessions, various management and technical sessions, as well as a first look at new solutions for network and service providers.

HP brings to market hundreds of service applications via a large ecosystem of 500+ partners.  Many of these will be showcased at 3GSM.  HP Labs is making large R&D investments in mobile technology and will be demonstrating some of the latest concepts that may well shape tomorrow's mobile world.

Carrier-grade platforms

Mobile operators are moving from proprietary, legacy systems to the modular, standards-based platforms that have been proven in the IT world.  HP, with its expertise in IT, is providing the technology that operators need to reduce cost and increase agility.  Through its Advanced Open Telecom Platform (AOTP), HP is delivering a full range of servers (standard, rack-mount and ATCA blade) running multiple operating systems, including carrier grade Linux, along with full professional services worldwide.

Network

In the heart of the network, HP delivers many of the key building blocks through its OpenCall portfolio of communications software.  Some examples:
• OpenCall signaling software (HP is the #1 provider of SS7 systems)
• OpenCall Home Location Register (HP’s HLR supports almost 200 million wireless customers) and Home Subscriber Service
• OpenCall Service Controllers and Gateways (which support 70% of the worlds SMS traffic)
• OpenCall Media Platform (OCMP was just upgraded to support IMS networks) including video services and solutions

A key element of the Services Lifecycle -- Service Creation and Deployment -- can be done via the HP Service Delivery Platform (SDP), a modular framework of software, hardware and services that pre-integrates network elements and gateways, common platform functions, and complex service creation and delivery processes.

HP is also becoming the trusted partner for operators just beginning the journey to 'IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS),' the next-generation IP-based technology that can dramatically simplify networks and reduce cost. In an IMS environment, wireless customers can talk to each other via an audio or video conference, share photos, music and messages, and locate each other on a map to arrange a convenient meeting – all in a seamless integrated call that is easy for the callers while minimizing cost and simplifying management for operators.

Going wireless

HP iPAQ hw6510 Mobile Messenger

HP brings to both enterprises and consumers an exciting array of wireless devices: notebook PCs, Tablet PCs, and handheld devices such as the iPAQ Pocket PC, most of which have built-in capability for WiFi hotspots and other wide-area wireless technologies.

An excellent example is the iPAQ Mobile Messenger which is geared towards mobile professionals who want access to their e-mail and business data seamlessly and securely, whether they are in the office or on the road.

• Multiple messaging capabilities so you stay in touch the way you want.
- Exchange 2003: Synchronizes your Outlook inbox, calendar, contacts, and tasks so you can remotely check your appointments and other important information.
- Picture and Video Messaging: Capture and share moments as they happen with MMS messages.
- Text Messaging: SMS messages are quick, easy and a discrete way to communicate.
- Instant Messaging: Communication in real time.
- Multiple inbox capabilities: Instantly access all of your e-mail accounts and take care of business wherever you are.

• Integrated GPS receiver in the iPAQ and GPS Navigation application powered by TomTom gives you driving directions at your fingertips to get you where you need to go.
– Turn-by-turn navigation to nearby restaurants, hotels, airports, movie theaters, gas stations, museums and many other points of interest.
– Maps are available for most cities in the United States, Canada and Western Europe.

"Wireless e-mail has experienced rapid growth over the last 12 months and will remain the foundation of business mobility over the next few years. HP has strong confidence in the future of wireless services that go far beyond wireless e-mail. We entered the converged device market in Q3 2004 and since then we are continuing to strongly expand our business,” comments Regine Hohnsbein, Director, Handhelds and Mobility, Personal Systems Group (PSG), Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA).

Bob Silverman, CIO of Spring Group plc - one of the UK’s largest recruitment organisations – says he can minimise the 'dead time' of costly senior executives with HP iPAQ Pocket PCs. “Our staff have found their new HP iPAQs indispensable; their speed and efficiency has led to greater flexibility and productivity. After just two hours with his device one director commented that he couldn’t live without it.”

According to Hohnsbein, “the huge success of our HP iPAQ Mobile Messenger hw6500 series proves we're on the right path, combining advanced wireless capabilities and integrated GPS navigation functionality with strong partnerships for wireless e-mail and services."

Support systems

Operations Support Systems (OSS) and Business Support Systems (BSS) capabilities, such as billing and service management, have become vitally important to network and service providers as customers increase their usage of mobile phones for data and multimedia services -- as well as traditional voice services.

The HP Integrated Service Management (ISM) blueprint is the company’s SOA-based framework that integrates OSS and BSS, and enables operators to:

• efficiently manage their mobile networks and services
• improve mediation and billing
• assure quality of service for customers

HP OpenView OSS solutions are key building blocks within HP ISM.  They are used by more than 400 service providers worldwide – and eight out of the world’s ten largest global operators.
